Ping was announced at Apple’s fall music event in 2010, but failed to gain traction with users. Now, Apple have completely shut down the network as of today. Apple announced that Ping was closing it’s doors just a few weeks ago. While there is still a Ping section in iTunes, you will get an error if you try and go into it.
There are many reasons why Ping didn’t work, the biggest was the lack of Facebook integration when it first launched. Without the integration of the world’s biggest social network, the service never achieved enough members. The only positive press Ping received, was probably when Apple boasted that it achieved 1 million signups in the first 24-hours.
